The Doe River Gorge
A friend told me about the Doe River Gorge.  It took me some time to see it, but it was well worth the wait.

This is one of the few remains of the original Tweetsie Railroad.  It ran from Tennessee up into the mountians of North Carolina.  There is now a small amusement park just outside of Boone.  It's called the Tweetsie Railroad.  It has one of the original trains that ran on this track.  The track is now open to people to walk on.  You have to sign a waiver first.  It is now owned by a Christian Camp Ground.  The track still runs for about 2 or 3 miles.  It has three tunnels and two tressels.

It's a narrow gauge track. The tunnels are still covered with soot.

These two tressels run about 60 feet off the water

One time I wish I had a wide angle lens.  My old room mate is standing on the track.  He is about 60 feet from the water and probably over 100 feet below the top of the cliff.

I was told that the Christian Camp is currently having this small train restored to running
condition.  They have already made some repairs on the track.
